Shards & Surge Mode
Small tasks, fast XP. Check them off and move on.
What Are Shards?
Shards are quick checkbox tasks designed for things that do not warrant a full quest. While quests have difficulty levels, objectives, deadlines, and abandon penalties, Shards are intentionally simple: create a task, check it off, earn 5 XP.
Think of Shards as the quick-capture tool for your productivity. That random errand, the quick email reply, the small chore you keep forgetting β these are all perfect Shard candidates.
When to Use Shards vs Quests
The distinction is straightforward: if a task takes more than a few minutes or has meaningful complexity, make it a quest. If it is quick and simple, make it a Shard.
Use a Shard
- β’ Reply to that email
- β’ Clean your desk
- β’ Take out the trash
- β’ Schedule a dentist appointment
- β’ Water the plants
Use a Quest
- β’ Write a report
- β’ Build a project feature
- β’ Study for an exam
- β’ Deep clean the kitchen
- β’ Prepare a presentation
There are no consequences for Shards. Unlike quests, you cannot abandon a Shard for HP damage. They simply exist until you complete or delete them.
XP and the Daily Cap
Every Shard awards a flat 5 XP when completed. There are no difficulty levels, quality ratings, or modifiers β every Shard is worth the same amount regardless of what the task is.
Daily XP Cap
Shard XP counts toward the same 100 XP daily cap as quest XP. Once you hit the cap, you can still check off Shards (they will be marked as complete), but they will not award additional XP until the next day. The day resets at 3 AM.
At 5 XP per Shard, you would need to complete 20 Shards to hit the daily cap from Shards alone. Most players use a mix of quests and Shards to reach the cap, with quests providing the bulk of the XP and Shards filling in the gaps.
Surge Mode
Surge mode is a mobile-only feature that transforms Shard completion into a rapid-fire experience. Instead of navigating to each Shard individually, Surge mode presents your pending Shards in a streamlined interface where you can check them off one after another in quick succession.
How Surge Mode Works
Activate Surge mode from the Shards screen on the mobile app. Your pending Shards appear in a focused, distraction-free interface. Tap to complete each one and immediately move to the next. The XP from each completion stacks up as you go, giving you a satisfying burst of progress.
Surge mode is designed for those moments when you have accumulated a batch of small tasks and want to clear them all at once. It is particularly effective after a busy day when quick wins help you feel productive before winding down.
Shard Strategies
Shards are simple by design, but using them strategically can improve your overall productivity system:
Shards in Your XP Economy
Shards fit into the broader XP and leveling system as a lightweight source of experience points. They do not replace quests β quests are your primary XP source and carry meaningful stakes (HP damage on abandon, quality ratings, skill linking). Shards complement quests by providing a fast way to earn XP from the small tasks that fill your day.
The leveling formula is 100 + (level - 1) x 10 XP to reach the next level. At 5 XP per Shard, that is 20 Shards to earn 100 XP β equivalent to one day at the cap. Most players will level faster by mixing in higher-difficulty quests, but Shards ensure that no productive action goes unrewarded.
No Penalties, No Pressure
Unlike quests, Shards carry no penalties. There is no HP loss for leaving a Shard incomplete, no deadline pressure, and no abandon mechanic. Shards are purely positive β they only reward, never punish.
This makes Shards the safest way to engage with MainQuest on low-energy days. Even if you do not feel up to tackling a full quest, you can create and complete a few Shards to stay active, earn some XP, and keep your momentum going without risking your character's HP.
