Getting Started with MainQuest

Your journey from zero to hero starts here.

What is MainQuest?

MainQuest is a gamified productivity app that treats your real life like an RPG. Every task becomes a quest. Every habit becomes a stat. Every day is a chance to level up.

Instead of checking boxes on a boring to-do list, you earn XP for completing quests, grow attributes by checking in on habits, and keep your character alive by staying productive. If you slack off, your character takes HP damage — and if HP hits zero, your hero dies.

Step 1: Create Your Hero

When you first open MainQuest, you will create your character. Pick a hero name and choose a class that represents who you want to become.

Pick a preset archetype — Scholar, Warrior, and more — and each comes with its own core attributes already set (Scholar leans into learning-focused stats, Warrior into fitness and discipline). You can rename it, write your own Oath, and add extra attributes on top of the preset ones.

Learn more about the class system in the Classes & Attributes guide.

Step 2: Complete Your First Quest

Quests are your tasks. Tap the + button, give your quest a name, and set a difficulty level from Easy to Epic. Higher difficulty means more XP on completion.

Example quest difficulties:

  • Easy: Go for a 15-minute walk
  • Medium: Write a blog post
  • Hard: Complete a coding project
  • Epic: Run a marathon

Once you complete the quest, you earn XP and your character levels up. For the full breakdown, read the Quests guide.

Step 3: Build Your First Habit

Habits are different from quests. They are recurring behaviors you check in on daily. Each check-in awards subpoints toward the habit's linked attribute, gradually growing your character's stats.

Start small — pick one habit you want to build, like "Drink 8 glasses of water" or "Read for 10 minutes." Check in consistently and watch your streak grow. Streaks are tracked with a 3 AM day boundary, so staying up past midnight will not break your streak.

Dive deeper in the Habits guide.

Step 4: Explore Your Character Sheet

Your character sheet shows everything about your hero:

  • HP (Health Points): Ranges from 0 to 100. You lose HP for slacking — quitting a quest mid-session, logging a bad habit day, or walking out of a Challenge early. Level up to fully recover.
  • XP (Experience Points): Earned by completing quests. Required XP per level = 100 + (level - 1) × 10.
  • Level: Your overall progress. Each level-up fully restores your HP to 100.
  • Attributes: Stats like Strength, Intelligence, etc. that grow from habit check-ins.

For the full breakdown of HP, XP, and what happens when you die, see the HP, XP & Death guide.

Tips

  • Start with one easy quest and one simple habit — don't overload yourself on day one.
  • Check in on habits at the same time each day to build consistency.
  • Your day resets at 3 AM, not midnight, so late-night tasks still count for today.
  • Explore the Dawn Scrolls feature in your morning routine for an XP boost.
