MainQuest FAQ
Everything you need to know, answered.
General
What is MainQuest?
MainQuest is a gamified productivity app that turns your real-life tasks into RPG quests. You earn XP, level up a character, build habits through streaks, and keep your hero alive by staying productive.
Is MainQuest free?
Yes — the free tier is usable forever, with no ads: unlimited quests and habits, one Class, one Skill, and full friends/party features. It is not "no subscriptions," though — see the next question.
Does MainQuest have a subscription?
Yes. MainQuest Pro is an optional paid subscription that unlocks Pet Companions, progress analytics, Challenges, quest repeat cadences, unlimited Skills and Habit Links, and up to 3 Classes. Pro starts with a 14-day free trial when you're eligible — and starting one grants your first pet egg. New accounts see a one-time subscription screen during onboarding, but you can decline it ("Remain Unawakened") and keep using the free tier forever — the mandatory screen never blocks you again, though you'll still see the occasional dismissible Pro offer.
What platforms is MainQuest available on?
MainQuest is available as a mobile app for iOS and Android and as a web app at mainquest.net. The two are near-full parity — death mechanics, the Clarity Buff, Dawn Scrolls, push notifications, and Surge Mode all work identically. See the Platform Differences guide for the handful of real gaps.
Is there an offline mode?
Both platforms tolerate losing your connection, differently. Mobile is local-first: quest completions, habit check-ins, focus logs, and water intake are saved on-device and replayed when you reconnect — though some screens (the Shop, Challenges) still need a connection. Web is server-authoritative with a durable retry queue for the same core actions; those are held in your browser for up to 24 hours, survive closing the tab, and send themselves on your next visit.
How do I sign up?
Three ways: Google, Apple, or a passwordless email magic link. Apple Sign-In is available on the web app and on iOS; Android uses Google or the magic link. There's no password to remember.
Gameplay
How does XP work?
You earn XP by completing quests and by checking in on habits. The amount of XP required to reach the next level follows the formula: 100 + (level - 1) x 10. There is a daily XP cap of 100 XP, which resets at 3 AM.
What happens when you die?
If your HP drops to 0 or below, your character dies and you are blocked from all gameplay until revived — identically on mobile and web. A Second Chance Scroll revives you to 50 HP: use one on yourself while fallen, or a friend can send you theirs.
What is the 3 AM day boundary?
MainQuest uses 3 AM as the boundary between days instead of midnight. This means late-night activity still counts for the current day, and daily resets (XP cap, habit check-ins, streaks) happen at 3 AM.
How do habits differ from quests?
Quests are one-time tasks that award XP on completion. Habits are recurring daily behaviors you check in on. Habit check-ins award XP and a small amount of Embercoin too, plus subpoints toward every linked attribute, gradually growing your character stats over time.
What happened to Shards?
Shards merged into Quests. What used to be a separate quick-task type is now Quick-Add — on web, type a name and it drops onto your list at Easy tier automatically, worth 8 XP, no setup required. (On mobile, small tasks go through the regular quest form for now.)
What are Pet Companions?
A companion you hatch from an egg, level up through real focus-session time, and evolve — a MainQuest Pro feature. See the Pet Companions guide for the full mechanic.
Is there a leaderboard?
Two, actually: a Focus board (ranked by focus-session time, weekly/monthly/all-time) and a Habits board (ranked by habit check-ins completed, weekly/monthly). See the Leaderboard guide for how ranking and rewards work.
What can I buy in the Shop?
A small, fixed lineup of consumables and pet eggs, paid for with Embercoin you earn by playing — never with real money. See the Shop guide for the full item list and prices.
Technical
Does my data sync across devices?
Yes. The mobile app uses local-first storage with an offline sync queue that pushes changes when you reconnect. The web app is server-authoritative, with a 24-hour retry queue for check-ins, quest completions, and focus logs so those aren't lost if your connection drops. Both platforms share the same backend data.
Can I use MainQuest without creating an account?
No. An account is required to use MainQuest. You can sign up with Google, Apple (web and iOS), or a passwordless email magic link.
Account
How do I add friends?
Three ways: share your friend code, add someone by the email on their existing MainQuest account, or send your personal invite link. If a friend's character dies, you can send them a Second Chance Scroll to revive them — or they can use one on themselves.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. You can delete your account from the settings menu. Deletion is immediate and permanent — there is no grace period — and all your data, progress, and character are removed. One important note: deleting your account does not cancel a Pro subscription — cancel that first through the App Store, Play Store, or Stripe, wherever you subscribed. If you only want a fresh start, a Hard Reset (also in settings) wipes progress while keeping your account.
