How Habit Links Work

Chain habits together and turn isolated actions into powerful routines.

What Are Habit Links?

A Habit Link is a chain of two or more habits grouped into a single routine. Instead of treating each habit as a standalone behavior, Habit Links connect them into a deliberate sequence. Completing every habit in the chain on the same day earns you bonus XP on top of the subpoints each individual check-in awards.

Think of Habit Links as your daily protocols. A morning chain might be Meditate β†’ Exercise β†’ Journal. Each habit still awards its own subpoints when checked in, but completing the full chain triggers a bonus reward that incentivizes the complete routine.

Creating a Habit Link

Before you can create a Habit Link, you need the individual habits that will form the chain. Once those exist, open the Habit Links screen and create a new chain by selecting the habits you want to include.

Example chains:

Morning Routine: Meditate 10 min β†’ Stretch β†’ Cold shower β†’ Journal
Study Block: Review flashcards β†’ Read 20 pages β†’ Write summary notes
Wind Down: No screens β†’ Herbal tea β†’ Read fiction β†’ Gratitude entry

Arrange the habits in the order you want to perform them. The order is for your own reference β€” the system does not enforce completion order, only that every habit in the chain is checked in by the end of the day.

Bonus XP for Full Chain Completion

The core incentive of Habit Links is the bonus XP you earn when you complete every habit in the chain within the same day. Individual habit check-ins still award their usual subpoints toward linked attributes, but the chain completion triggers an additional XP reward.

How It Works

Check in on each habit in the chain throughout the day. Once the last habit in the chain is checked in, the bonus XP is automatically awarded. Remember that the day boundary is 3 AM, so late-night check-ins still count for the current day. The bonus XP is still subject to the daily XP cap of 100 XP.

This system rewards consistency and routine-building. Completing three isolated habits is good, but completing a deliberate chain is better β€” and the bonus XP reflects that.

Chain Streaks

Just like individual habits track streaks, each Habit Link tracks its own chain streak. The chain streak counts how many consecutive days you have completed the entire chain β€” every habit in the link, checked in on consecutive days.

Missing even one habit in the chain on a given day breaks the chain streak, resetting the counter to zero. However, individual habit streaks are tracked independently. If you complete three out of four habits in a chain, those three habits still maintain their own individual streaks β€” only the chain streak resets.

Chain streaks use the same 3 AM day boundary as individual habit streaks. A chain completed at 1 AM counts for the previous day. You need to complete the full chain again after 3 AM to extend the chain streak to the next day.

Designing Effective Chains

The best Habit Links follow the principle of habit stacking β€” each completed habit naturally leads into the next. This reduces the friction of starting each subsequent habit because you already have momentum from the previous one.

βœ“Group habits that happen at the same time of day
βœ“Order them so each habit flows naturally into the next
βœ“Keep chains to 3-5 habits β€” long chains are harder to complete
βœ—Mix morning and evening habits in one chain
βœ—Put your hardest habit first β€” start with something easy to build momentum

If your chain feels overwhelming, remember that each habit can have a microversion. On tough days, completing the microversion of each habit still counts and keeps your chain streak alive.

Chain Streaks vs Individual Streaks

It is important to understand the difference between these two types of streaks, as they are tracked independently:

Individual Habit Streak: Tracks consecutive days of checking in on a single habit. Each habit has its own streak counter. Missing a check-in on one habit only affects that habit's streak.
Chain Streak: Tracks consecutive days of completing every habit in a Habit Link. All habits in the chain must be checked in on the same day for the chain streak to continue. Missing any one habit breaks the chain streak.

This means you can break a chain streak without breaking any individual habit streaks. If your morning chain has four habits and you complete three of them, those three maintain their individual streaks β€” but the chain streak resets.

Building Routines with Habit Links

Habit Links are the foundation of routine building in MainQuest. By chaining habits together, you transform scattered daily behaviors into structured protocols that compound over time.

Start small. Create a chain of two habits you already do consistently, then add a new habit you want to build. The existing habits create momentum, and the new habit benefits from being attached to an established routine.

As your chains become second nature, you can extend them or create additional chains for different parts of your day. Combine Habit Links with attribute growth from Classes to see how your daily routines translate into long-term character development.

Tips

  • β˜…Start with a short chain of 2-3 habits before building longer routines.
  • β˜…Order habits in the sequence you naturally want to do them β€” morning chains work great.
  • β˜…If one habit in a chain feels too hard, use its microversion to keep the chain streak alive.
  • β˜…Create separate chains for morning, afternoon, and evening routines.
  • β˜…A broken chain streak only resets the chain counter β€” individual habit streaks are tracked independently.
